#60: Jonathan Is Home

Jonathan has been out of town since Monday morning, and he came home today. It wasn't a long trip, but it has been quite a while since we've been away from each other...and I missed him a lot. Porter and Ollie did too. It's funny how much our little family hurts when one of us is away. It makes me grateful for every moment. Of course, FaceTime chats with him and my mom helped with the loneliness (Porter really thought he was hiding in the kitchen), but it's still much better to have him in person rather than in my iPhone.
I am a lucky girl to have this man beside me.

#59: FaceTime

I discovered the joys of FaceTime tonight. Isn't the iPhone an incredible thing? It has truly changed the way we communicate and brought us closer together than we ever thought possible.
It does make me a little sad that we didn't have such things years ago when my family had an ocean between us.
Or maybe that just makes me appreciate it just a little more.
Thank you, Steve Jobs.

#58: Springy

So I have decided that we aren't getting a winter this year. I'm a little sad about it, but now that we're almost to March, I'm ready for spring. Today it was quite warm, and it stayed light until almost 6. I could feel spring on the horizon, and I could see it starting to pop up around the yard...
Hello, roses!
Hello, Jane Magnolia!
Ahh, springtime!
And I have finally resorted to drinking Emergen-C, as my cold is still kicking me in the butt. Here's hoping it works. I really, really don't want to go to the doctor. Ugh.

#57: Still Sick and the Oscars

Despite an entire weekend at home, we're both still sick. We sat on the couch most of the day, drinking tea and watching movies. We made more soup and homemade French bread, and then we watched the Oscars this evening. I love Billy Crystal, and it was great to see Christopher Plummer win Best Supporting Actor. He's 82 and still looks amazing. I can't believe that was his first win.
Michelle Williams stole my heart fashion-wise -- she always looks timeless but different from everyone else.
It was also great to see the South was well-represented this year.

#56: Kitchen Ideas

Lots of relaxation today -- we slept in, cooked breakfast, researched house ideas and then took Porter on really long walk. The air was cool but sun was out, so after walking we sat outside with the pets for a while and enjoyed the afternoon. When the wind got to us, we came inside, lit some candles, put on some calming music and read for a while. Of course I fell asleep, but it fit the day -- simple and relaxing. We need more days like this.
Today's inspiring home renovation comes in the form of butcher block countertops. I've always liked them, and I really want to replace our counterto
ps with some dark ones. I think they would really make our white cabinets pop. An added bonus: they are really affordable. The thing that bothers me is that there isn't anything wrong with our current countertops. They are laminate, but they are in really good condition and they match the cabinets perfectly. But the butcher block would be really nice, especially with an enamel sink and copper faucet. Just inspiration for now though.
See? Not bad, but I think there's room for improvement...

#55:Downton and Pizza

Have you seen Downton Abbey yet? Jonathan and I capped off a week of sniffles and coughing by staying in to watch season one. We also enjoyed way too much food from High Point Pizza. Sadly, it was neither healthy nor vegan. It was a much needed night of relaxation though!

#54: Living

Thursday is cleaning night at our house, and I was relieved to get that out of the way tonight, despite feeling less than 100 percent. While I swept the dust bunnies around the living room, I had a good look at the things that surround us. It's easy to overlook them when I'm running around like crazy during the week, but I really do love our silly little treasures. They are only things, but they are cheerful and many of them hold special memories. After years of living out of sight, our Hermes box is finally on our coffee table under some of our favorite books. I was inspired by this photo.
I love this old book (my great-grandma's) and tray (my most recent estate sale find).
This painting belonged to my grandma and used to hang in her bedroom. I always loved it, and I was so happy when my mom gave it to me last fall. Eventually it'll hang in our living room, but I haven't figured out how I want to group it with our other "art."
Randomly, I'm on the hunt for a new litter box for Oliver. Today's trip to Petsmart was unsuccessful, but I did see this fabulous box...complete with stairs. I don't think Ollie would be a fan, but I thought it was pretty funny.

#53: Down

I finally gave into my cold and worked from home today. Usually I love being at home when I work, but today wasn't one of those days. Maybe it was my stuffy head, but I suddenly felt like the most insecure person in the world. When this happens, paralyzing self doubt takes over, and I realize that not everything is as it should be and I'm not where I imagined I would be at this point in my life. The whole world feels like a house of cards, just waiting to crumble at any moment. All of these fears take over, and I start to panic. I try to fix these issues in my head, but nothing adds up. Jonathan is always there to ease my worries, but even he can't help me go up against my critical nature. Sounds fun, right? It's been happening a lot lately, and it stinks. Could it be a quarter life crisis? I do wonder about that. Another part of me wonders if it means I need a change in my life, but I can't figure out what change I need to make. So, until I work it out, I'll continue to tap it all out on this blog. Things aren't ever as bad as we make them out to be, right? I just really, really don't want to be one of those people who always feels sorry for themselves....Ugh.

#52: Potty Style

Coughing all day = Lack of original posts. Instead, here are a few Pinterest bathrooms that are inspiring me...
This vanity is perfect. LOVE.
I love the tile. It reminds me of Italy.
Pale yellow is my favorite bathroom color, and natural light is a must.
I love this Anthropologie-esque bathroom. The art adds so much originality.
Another pretty bathroom that reminds me of Europe. The Florentine end table is lovely, and I adore the wall-mounted candelabra and mirror.

#51: Comfort Food

Our first pot pie in all its yummy glory....
I've had a bit of a cold the past few days, but fortunately my appetite is still intact and my taste buds haven't been off. What a relief, because we decided to make our first veggie pot pie last night. We used this recipe, except we substituted wheat flour for the all purpose flour and omitted the tofu. I was so happy to have something yummy to eat when I was feeling all yucky inside. And for once I was glad we were eating the same thing for lunch and for dinner....it was that good!

#50: Sunny Sunday

Although it wasn't warm, the sun came out long enough for us to take a two hour walk this afternoon. It has been a really long time since we've walked for more than 30 minutes, and it was great for us and for Porter who clearly thought it was his lucky day.
After checking the 10-day forecast, it's pretty obvious that we're not going to have a winter this year. It's supposed to be in the 60s this week and in the 50s on the weekend. I'm not complaining because I'd rather have an early spring if it's not going to snow, but I really, really wanted to have at least one real snow day this year. Porter loves the snow so much, and we do too.
Maybe it'll snow the first week of March, just like it did when we moved into our house four years ago. Fingers crossed!

#49: Winning and House Stuff

This afternoon we worked on several house projects. They were small ones, but we were able to finish them. We finally hung our chandelier and several pictures, and we fixed another of our broken screen doors.
Ollie relaxed on our bed while we worked.
In Grizz news, the Memphis Grizzlies pulled off another last-minute, one point win tonight, their second in the past two nights. This time they beat the Golden State Warriors, thanks to everyone's favorite player, Tony Allen, who pushed a missed Rudy Gay shot into the hoop.
Hip-hip-hooray!
Here's OJ Mayo in the air during one of his many great shots of the night.

#48: Best Guac

The best guacamole in the city comes from Las Delicias...It's so good you'll eat it until you're about to pop. A dinner of guac, salsa, chips, beans and rice were just what we needed tonight after a long week and gym workout #4. :)
Mmm!

#47: Ready for the Weekend

Nothing like a Thursday night to get a jump start on the weekend. Three workouts behind us, and the house is clean. Yes!
On a completely unrelated note, I have been hearing a lot of people talk about traveling abroad this year, and it has me thinking about England. I don't miss it as much as I miss California, but I always pine for it at Christmas and other random times throughout the year. This June marks 20 years in the States for us, but I still miss the quaint loveliness that is the English countryside and the original big city feeling that you can only find in London.

#46: Busy, Busy

Things we did today (besides work, of course!):
1. Test-drove a Jetta -- Jonathan is getting the car itch again
2. Listened to the rain while I worked
3. Got my hair cut by Robin Tucker, my super-awesome hairdresser
4. Made this for dinner (yay Pinterest)
5. Cooked a sweet potato and collard greens for lunch on Friday
6. Listened to the Grizzlies play the Nets (Grizz won)
7. Cleaned the bathroom (now only the rest of the house to go)
8. Enjoyed some funny Grizzlies' post game tweets
9. Tried to convince myself I'm not getting a sinus infection although my throat is sore. Boo.

#45: Valentine

Homemade chocolate truffles and strawberries.
Handmade hearts and candles saved from our second Valentine's Day and our first V-Day at home celebration....a tradition since 2005.
Champagne.
Vegan Alfredo with a little too much onion. Oops.
Our V-Day teddy from our first year of college.
A margarita with a little too much ice. Oops.
Pretty roses and a Grizz win. Happy Valentine's Day!

#44: Cooking Up A Storm

Because of last night's late night basketball game, we weren't able to cook our dinners for the week like we usually do. Tonight after the gym, we got to work on a really yummy looking stir fry that I found on Pinterest. It was delicious....I'm going to give it two thumbs up.
I have found so many good recipes on Pinterest lately. And, believe it or not, quite a few of them are healthy. Mmmm....
This is what we ate last week. It was also really good, although we might have added a little too much ginger.
This meal is also on this week's dinner menu. We'll likely be making it on Wednesday.
This is another meal on my radar. I wanted to make it last week, but Whole Foods hid the brussel sprouts from me. I found them this week, so we might try this one next week. I've never been a fan of brussel sprouts, but I'm willing to give them another chance.
Don't get me started on the not-so-healthy Pinterest recipes. I have quite a few of them saved as well. :)

#43: Tams

No, we didn't get to the game early enough to score free Memphis Tams hats, but we did enjoy plenty of '70s throwback music and entertainment. Here is a guy dressed as Elvis dunking...
And here are the Grizzlies warming up in their lovely Tams uniforms. Yes, they are green and yellow, and yes, the hats have pom-poms on top. It's funny seeing a bunch of American men wearing Scottish hats.
The Grizz lost. I've decided the Tams uniforms are bad luck since they've lost both times they've worn them.
